Mental Health Monday - 06.26.23

Progress.Setbacks.Victory.Defeat.Wins.Losses.Hope.Fear.

It's never going to be just one thing. We're going to face the good days and the bad ones. One of my favorite Bible verses is Matthew 6:34, which says,

"Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." - Matthew 6:34 KJV

I like the idea that worry is futile. Anxiety is a wasted exercise. Each day is going to be full of both good and evil. For one person, it is going to be the best day of their life, for someone else, the worst. We don't get to choose, but we can be prepared.

I know what it's like to feel like your legs are being taken out from under you with every bit of bad fortune that comes our way. In my case, much of it self-induced. I know what it is to ride the highs and lows of joy and sorrow, extacy, and depression. It's a rough way to live, to be at the mercy of your addictions, your emotions, and your past. I wouldn't recommend it.

I also know what it's like to have a firm foundation. To have a beautiful and loving wife who takes me at my best and my worst.m and shares her struggles and victories with me. I have learned what it is to have good relationships and strong people in my life who love and support me. To have Faith in God and His Word. To have worked to build some semblance of a strong base with my life. To have someone to talk to when things get complicated.

There's always going to be a "next thing." Good and bad. It seems to be to be beneficial to be more stoic, more calm, and more level-headed than to be like a boat in a storm of circumstance. Building a strong foundation feels much better than the alternative.

How do we build a strong base?One rock at a time. One day at a time.

Small steps to big things.
